An introduction to EC²

Many of the recent blockbuster pharmaceutical drugs such as Lipitor, Nexium, Zecor; in fact 7 of the last 10 blockbusters have chiral active forms and given the important role chirality plays in biological systems this trend is set to continue.

The importance that chiral molecules play in new drug entities is indicated by the number of absolute configuration (AC) determinations of chiral molecules obtained every year. This has more than doubled over the past few years to an estimated 700 AC’s carried out at the present time and this trend is set to continue for the foreseeable future.

The American Food and Drug Administration (FDA) guidelines have effectively determined that mixtures of chiral compounds can no longer be brought to the pharmaceuticals market place without thorough chiral evaluation and so new pharmaceuticals chiral forms should be pure and separately assessed for registration this drives the need for chiral AC’s in the development of pharmaceuticals and the demand for single isomers.

Not only is the need for understanding chiral structure and function driven by legislative bodies but also the fundamental need for understanding the role chiral chemistry plays in many chemical processes and biological systems. This knowledge is applied across many areas on the long journey to creating new medicines from discovery, design, to QA/QC.

Vibrational Circular Dichroism (VCD) and Raman Optical Activity (ROA) collectively known as Vibrational Optical Activity (VOA) are two advanced chiral probes that can provide great insights in these application areas.

The range of applications that these instruments are used for is also growing and includes determination of absolute structural confirmation; Protein and other macromolecule conformational determination, fibril formation, reaction monitoring, and formulation studies are among some of the key applications of VOA chiral probes.

The creation of EC² will enable many scientists to gain easy access to a wide body of knowledge, know-how, and advanced VOA instrumentation to provide fast and reliable chirality-based analysis. The European Centre for Chirality (EC²)

Is an analytical services business providing a number of chiral related analytical programmes such as chiral structural determination and related applications. EC² offers both VCD and ROA techniques together known as Vibrational Optical Activity (VOA) to undertake its service based activities.

EC² is a unique blend of expertise and a resource provided through the partnership of the BioTools Inc, University of Antwerp and Ghent University and is dedicated to help advance the understanding the role chirality plays in biological processes.

The EC² mission is to help academic and industrial scientists in a broad range of chirality related applications through offering services ranging from the determination of absolute chiral configurations, VOA measurements, computational modelling, including expert consultancy, VOA workshops to open access instrumentation and even tailor made programmes designed to meet your experimental needs.
